Despite a prickly first encounter, he is charmed and intrigued by this mysterious girl who doesn’t believe in love. What’s the point of pretending to fall in love with a girl just so she’ll pretend to fall in love with him back? But when his father invites all the suitable girls in the kingdom to a masked ball, Anax must finally give in and select a wife.Īs fate would have it, the preparations for the masquerade bring him Maia, who was asked by her eldest stepsister to deliver letters to Anax. But what reads like a perfect college résumé (she enrolled in Cornell) belies Keri’s anguish. Her Harvard-educated lawyer father drove her to skating practice, and her Cornell-educated grade-school-teacher mother gave her standardized tests “for fun” and made sure Keri tried “all the possible childhood activities,” including piano, soccer, horseback riding, gymnastics, Girl Scouts - “a smorgasbord of suburbia.”īlakinger was an A student, won writing awards and became a competitive figure skater. From the outside, Blakinger had a charmed childhood. Many families and many people have parallel narratives: one for public consumption, another the truth. Ultimately, there’s nothing comical about her descent. It’s funny at times - and I felt bad laughing about someone sinking as low as Blakinger did, but she’s sardonically witty, so I couldn’t help myself. Keri Blakinger’s brave, brutal memoir, “Corrections in Ink,” is a riveting story about suffering, recovery and redemption. From a New York Times review by David Sheff of the book by Keri Blakinger titled “Corrections in Ink”: With a combination of case studies about huge losses - lost revenue, lost reputation, lost time, lost opportunity - and practical, down-to-earth advice that was all gained through painful experience, this book helps you avoid the pitfalls that cost companies millions of dollars in downtime and reputation. I'm supposed to find this endearing but instead I find him to be a creepy stalker that needs to be stopped. Did God decide to make angels into creepy stalkers or what? Why is every angel either a stalker or an abusive person or a narcissist in these romances? Patch regularly taunts and torments Nora, and is a complete and utter asshole to her. My other issue is I don't know why fallen angels always have to have this horrible stalker tendency while also being obviously of God. There's a problem with these Angel quartets and onward, and it's that they have so many books that they literally make their main plot line something that stars in the second, or the third book. If you're going to Angel route reveal it within the first book and upfront and have it be the plot point, not just a later thing that we fall into in the next book, and the next book. This is a huge problem I have with these books. I don't know why they always seem to take 75% of the book to do the grand reveal that he is a fallen angel. Patch spends the entire book being an utter twat, and at the end of it we get this grand reveal. Nora's life is relatively normal, until one day she's made aware of Patch. Where's Captain Hook or Peg Leg Pete to lurk around instead of Patch the not-pirate. Even before their marriage, red flags abound, and Mandl quickly turns out to be violent, abusive, and controlling, even going so far as to lock her in their ostentatious home. The novel covers Hedy’s life from about age nineteen, during the height of her Austrian stage career and just as she was beginning her courtship with Friedrich Mandl, an arms dealer and one of the richest and most powerful men in Austria, through the middle of the Second World War. And because of her inventions, which were eventually used by the Navy and which formed the basis of today’s wi-fi, I’m counting this as PopSugar’s 2020 Reading Challenge prompt for a book about or by a woman in STEM. This month’s selection was The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict (Sourcebooks Landmark, 2019), a fictionalized account of the life of Hedy Lamarr, the Austrian-American actress and inventor of a radio frequency-hopping system for torpedoes. It’s a new year, so that means new ambitions, and I’ve resolved to go back to the library book discussion group! I got away from it last year after schedule conflicts and being sick, but with my daughter being in school, I can always hit the Wednesday afternoon group if I have a schedule conflict with the Thursday night group. "There’s a lot of memories for me at Dodger Stadium," Cone, the former Cy Young winner and five-time World Series champion, tells USA TODAY Sports, "but that series, that game, it’s something I’ll never forget." It’s Dodger Stadium, site of Sunday Night’s ESPN baseball game between the Dodgers and New York Yankees, where Cone will be the color analyst. This is where David Cone’s journalism career was born, and instantly died, wanting to write his own obituary after the fallout. This is where Los Angeles Dodgers manager Tommy Lasorda was screaming at him and fans were yelling at him. This is the place where he stood on the mound, so nervous that he could actually feel his legs shaking, wanting to dig a hole, jump inside, and never come out.
